Patrice Chéreau – passeur du théâtre allemand en France

Il s’agit visiblement d’une histoire croisée : L’admiration pour Patrice Chéreau en tant qu’artiste d’exception en Allemagne correspondait tout à fait à l’influence que la culture allemande a exercé sur son œuvre. Considéré comme un véritable « ambassadeur », il a reçu la même année (1993) non seulement la médaille du Goethe-Institut (Goethe-Medaille) mais aussi le Prix Friedrich-Gundolf de la Deutsche Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung (Académie de la langue et la littérature allemande), destiné aux médiateurs de la culture allemande à l’étranger. A juste titre, d’ailleurs : C’est Chéreau qui a fait découvrir aux spectateurs français le théâtre d’auteurs allemands jusque-là très peu connus en France : Lenz, Dorst, Wedekind… En outre, ce fort attachement de Patrice Chéreau à la culture allemande se reflète aussi dans ses collaborations artistiques par exemple avec Bernard Sobel ou Michel Bataillon – germanistes comme lui. Patrice Chéreau – mediator du German theatre in France

One could call it a “histoire croisée”: The admiration for Patrice Chéreau as artist in Germany corresponds to the degree of influence which the German culture had on his work. Recognised as an “ambassador”, he received in 1993 not only the medal of the Goethe-Institut, but also the prize Friedrich-Gundolf of the German Academy for Language and Poetry (Deutsche Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung), which is destined for mediators of German culture abroad. Rightly in fact, incidentally, because it was Chéreau, who has discovered for the French stage until then unknown German playwriters as Lenz, Dorst or Wedekind. Furthermore, this strong relationship is also reflected in his close artistic collaboration with other theatre-makers like Bernard Sobel or Michel Bataillon – Germanists like himself. The lecture traces the origin of this connection and analyses the role of Chéreau as a German-French mediator.
